"Even though I didn’t grow up in a neighborhood where people started the hip-hop trend by rapping on street corners like at the beginning of the movie “Brown Sugar,” I’m nostalgic for those old-school beats. I grew up in the Midwest. When I was a kid, our family listened to Dan Fogelberg, Ella Fitzgerald, Joan Baez, etc. I never got to experience the hip-hop genre emerge, and wasn’t even exposed to it until long after Common and Rakim gave way to Kanye and Eminem. Let me be clear, I like Kanye, and even Eminem on occasion, but in terms of the sweet roots of the hip-hop genre, they don’t hold a candle to Godson’s debut album, Chilled Coffee. Uniquely spare in vocals, yet rich in drums, brass, syncopation, and that fuzzily produced editing sound, the whole album is a doorway into something new on the scene of rhythm and groove mainly because it feels of a different time, like meeting a new friend who’s an ‘old-soul’, or being called one yourself and finally feeling understood...

....Each of the previous 8 tracks mysteriously alludes to that message, but doesn’t give it away. Instead, those tracks are journeys within themselves that briefly hint at theme, but perfectly link together to prime the listener for those last, overtly emotional, message driven tracks. Godson’s Chilled Coffee is both a series of clues to the future and a series of moments to sink into, memories of the past. It leaves space for the listener to wonder, to dream, but also grounds us in what we love and where that love came from—the rhythms, the effects, the home-boy-beats, the streets. I’m smitten."
